Maharashtra Seeks Removal of Bike Taxi Feature From App Aggregators

The Maharashtra government has intensified its action against app-based mobility services by directing major ride-hailing platforms including Ola, Uber, and Rapido to remove the bike taxi option from their applications. Authorities have stated that two-wheeler taxi services are not permitted under the state’s existing transport regulations.

Government Flags Non-Compliance in App-Based Services

According to officials from the state cyber cell, aggregators must ensure that the bike taxi feature is completely disabled across their platforms. The directive emphasizes full removal of the service, not just limited or backend restrictions.

Authorities maintain that allowing bike taxi bookings through mobile applications violates Maharashtra’s transport framework, which does not currently authorize commercial passenger services on two-wheelers. Officials have warned that partial compliance will not be considered sufficient.

A senior cyber cell representative stated that platforms hosting such services are responsible for ensuring regulatory adherence and must eliminate all unauthorized service options from their systems.

Transport Department Pushes for Enforcement Action

The state transport department has reportedly communicated with the cybercrime division, requesting immediate enforcement against platforms continuing to offer bike taxi services. Officials have also suggested legal action, including the filing of FIRs against responsible executives if companies fail to comply with the order.

The government’s stance is rooted in concerns over regulatory oversight, arguing that bike taxi operations bypass essential requirements such as commercial licensing, passenger safety protocols, and applicable taxation norms.

Clarification: No Ban on Cab Services

Amid public confusion, the Directorate General of Information and Public Relations (DGIPR) clarified that normal cab services provided by Ola, Uber, and Rapido remain unaffected. Reports suggesting a complete shutdown of these platforms were dismissed as inaccurate.

Authorities confirmed that enforcement measures are strictly limited to the bike taxi segment, which is currently not approved under state transport law. Traditional four-wheeler taxi and cab services will continue without disruption.

Safety and Regulatory Concerns Drive Action

Officials have highlighted concerns over safety standards, insurance coverage, and accountability in app-based bike taxi operations. Since the service operates outside formal regulatory approval in Maharashtra, authorities argue that passengers and drivers may not be adequately protected under existing legal safeguards.
