A 50-year-old taxi driver in Mumbai has been arrested for allegedly cheating an American tourist by charging ₹18,000 for a journey of barely 400 metres. The incident came to light after the tourist shared her experience on social media platform X, prompting swift police action.

Police identified the accused as Deshraj Yadav, who allegedly picked up the tourist from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and drove her around Andheri East for nearly 20 minutes before dropping her at a nearby five-star hotel. Despite the short distance, the driver reportedly demanded payment equivalent to 200 US dollars (~₹18,000).

Authorities acted quickly after the social media post went viral. Investigators examined CCTV footage, traced the taxi’s movement, and arrested Yadav within three hours of registering the complaint. Police are also probing the involvement of a second person reportedly present during the ride.

The case has renewed concerns about tourist safety in Mumbai, particularly around airports and railway stations, and highlights the risks of overcharging and exploitation. Police officials said enhanced monitoring, random checks, and improved grievance mechanisms are being considered to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Yadav remains in custody while authorities continue their investigation. Additional arrests could follow if evidence of organized exploitation emerges. The incident also underscores the growing role of social media in bringing misconduct to light and prompting rapid law enforcement response.
