Absconding for Years, Three Accused Finally Held in Mortgage Fraud Case

After years of evading law enforcement, three key suspects linked to a major mortgage loan fraud case have been arrested by Jaipur Police, marking a significant breakthrough in a long-running financial crime investigation involving alleged forged property documents and fraudulent bank loans.

The accused — former bank manager Madanlal Katta, Ajay Sharma, and Sapna Sharma — are alleged to have played crucial roles in securing substantial loans through fabricated records and disputed property collateral, resulting in significant financial losses to a banking institution.

Fraud Case Dates Back to 2018

The arrests are connected to a large-scale fraud case registered in 2018, in which authorities named 59 individuals, including former bank officials, employees, borrowers, and guarantors. The accused were booked under charges related to criminal conspiracy, cheating, forgery, and financial misconduct.

Investigators allege that the suspects used forged ownership documents and questionable property records to obtain mortgage loans that would not have been approved under normal verification procedures. Once sanctioned, the loans were allegedly withdrawn and misused, causing losses worth several crores of rupees.

Forged Property Documents Under Investigation

According to investigators, several properties submitted as collateral during the loan approval process were either involved in ownership disputes or supported by falsified documentation.

Authorities suspect that standard banking safeguards and verification procedures were bypassed, allowing the loans to be approved despite irregularities in the mortgage records. The alleged fraud came to light after loan repayments failed and internal reviews exposed inconsistencies in the documentation.

Subsequent inquiries reportedly uncovered serious lapses in due diligence and weaknesses in the institution’s verification mechanisms, leading to a broader criminal investigation.

Special Team Tracked Absconding Suspects

While numerous individuals connected to the case were arrested over the years, the three recently detained suspects remained out of reach despite repeated efforts by law enforcement agencies.

To accelerate the search, authorities announced cash rewards of ₹10,000 each for information leading to their capture. A dedicated special investigation team was assigned to trace the accused and gather intelligence regarding their movements.

Investigators utilized technical surveillance, mobile phone tracking, and confidential informant networks to identify potential hideouts. Acting on fresh intelligence, police conducted a coordinated operation that resulted in the successful arrest of all three suspects.

The accused have since been taken into custody and are being questioned regarding their alleged involvement in the fraud.

Probe Expands Into Wider Conspiracy

Authorities are now examining whether the case extends beyond the individuals already identified. Investigators are reviewing financial records, loan files, property documents, and transaction histories to determine whether additional beneficiaries or facilitators were involved.

The inquiry is also focused on identifying those responsible for preparing or validating the allegedly forged property records used to obtain loan approvals.

Officials believe further analysis of banking data and mortgage transactions could uncover additional links and potentially expose a larger fraud network operating behind the scheme.

Mortgage Fraud Remains a Growing Concern

Financial crime experts say the case highlights the importance of strict due diligence practices within the banking sector. Mortgage fraud schemes often exploit weaknesses in property verification processes, document authentication systems, and internal oversight mechanisms.

Experts recommend stronger digital land record integration, independent asset verification, and enhanced compliance procedures to reduce the risk of similar frauds in the future.

Investigation Continues

The arrest of the three long-absconding suspects is being viewed as a major milestone in the eight-year-old investigation. Authorities are continuing forensic examinations of financial records and property transactions as they work to determine the full extent of the alleged fraud.

Further arrests and legal action may follow as investigators continue to unravel the network behind the disputed mortgage loans and trace the flow of funds associated with the case.
